University of South Florida’s planned Center for Veterans Reintegration was highlighted by First Lady Michelle Obama as she unveiled a new initiative to meet the health care needs of veterans and those in the military.

Under the program, medical schools will improve education, research and clinical care to better address the health issues that military families face.

The Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine and 130 colleges and universities, including USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, committed to the program, a White House statement said.

Obama mentioned the USF facility, described in an exclusive report in the Dec. 16 Tampa Bay Business Journal, as an example of universities stepping up to the issue. USF is working with the Department of Defense and the VA to create the proposed center — a single, cohesive research, treatment and education facility for veterans and families.

Dr. Stephen Klasko, chief executive of USF Health and dean of the Morsani College of Medicine, attended the event and said in a statement from USF that USF was honored to participate in the initiative.
