The St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport had some upbeat news to report about its 2011 traffic.
It marked a 7 percent increase in traffic, its best numbers since it logged a record 1.3 million in 2004, a Tampa Tribune report said.
The airport has been focused on a strategy of increasing the volume of travelers that start their trips locally, bringing on and working to see an expansion of service from low-cost carriers such as Allegiant Air.
Traffic increased to 833,068 passengers last year.
Airport director Noah Lagos is optimistic the facility will continue to grow in 2012, especially noteworthy at a time when other airports are seeing declines, he told the Tribune. It will get a continued boost from Allegiant, which is converting its MD-80 fleet from 150 to 166 passengers by removing the aircraft galleys.
