Manufacturing - Innovation Takes Flight
As the birthplace of passenger air transportation – Tony Jannus piloted the first regularly scheduled commercial flight across from St. Petersburg to Tampa in 1914 – it is only fitting that the Tampa Bay region continues to play a key role in aviation, aerospace, and national defense.
Anchored by a strong roster of prime contractors such as Raytheon, Honeywell, L-3, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, DRS, Cobham and others, a deep and thorough supply chain of small and medium-sized companies, including precision machining and research & design firms, have found Tampa Bay’s low business costs and talented workforce key inputs to their productive processes, and profits.
With an abundance of sun and water, it should be no surprise that Tampa Bay manufacturers also play a part in emerging sciences and applications in solar power and nano-hydrology. Recently, Jabil Circuit, Sybac Solar, Dais Analytic and Orbeco-Hellige have all announced projects leading to new or expanded facilities and increased sales and employment.
